Baylon Spector BUF LB
Bills' Baylon Spector: Fighting for top reserve role
3m agoSpector (back) is competing with Dorian Williams for Buffalo's top backup role at linebacker, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Spector appears to be recovered from the back injury that ended his 2023 season early, and he remains secure as a key special-teams contributor. Because of his draft capital as a 2023 third-round pick, Williams will likely be the favorite to win the top backup role this offseason, but Spector could have a solid chance to earn more opportunities if he can impress.

Jalyn Armour-Davis BAL CB
Ravens' Jalyn Armour-Davis: On roster bubble?
7m agoDavis (concussion) could be on the roster bubble to begin training camp, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
Armour-Davis, a 2022 fourth-round pick, suited up for just four games as a rookie then eight games in 2023, when he ended year on IR with a concussion. He could have his work cut out to earn a roster spot, especially given that he mostly contributed on special teams in 2023.

Martavis Bryant DAL WR
Martavis Bryant: Let go by Dallas
15m agoThe Cowboys informed Bryant on Wednesday that he will be released, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Bryant, who last suited up for an NFL game in 2018 with the Raiders, signed a reserve/future contract with Dallas earlier this offseason but will now have to search for an opportunity to reignite his career elsewhere. His release does not result in any dead money against the salary cap for the Cowboys, per Gehlken.

Ben DiNucci DEN QB
Ben DiNucci: Let go by Denver
1h agoThe Broncos are slated to release DiNucci, Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post reports.
DiNucci, who spent the 2023 season on the Broncos' practice squad, was elevated to the team's game-day roster three times, but didn't log any regular-season snaps. With the 2020 third-rounder no longer in the mix, Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson currently head Denver's QB corps.
-
Justin Shorter BUF WR
Bills' Justin Shorter: Candidate for depth WR role
2h agoShorter, whose rookie season was derailed by a hamstring injury, is in line to compete for depth slotting behind fellow wide receivers Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Curtis Samuel, the Buffalo News reports.
The Bills took Shorter in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but he never saw game action after being placed on IR ahead of the regular season. Though Shorter was designated to return from IR in December and was subsequently able to practice with the team, he wasn't activated when his 21-day window closed. Now presumably past his hamstring issue, the 6-4, 223-pounder is slated to vie with Chase Claypool, Mack Hollins, KJ Hamler, Andy Isabella and Quintez Cephus for a reserve WR/special teams role in his second campaign with Buffalo.

De'Von Achane MIA RB
Dolphins' De'Von Achane: Joined by rookie in RB room
2h agoAchane and Raheem Mostert gained some competition for snaps via the additon of rookie Jaylen Wright in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, David Furones of SI.com reports.
Achane is coming off a rookie campaign in which he rushed for 800 yards and eight scores (7.8 YPC) in just 11 games, while Mostert racked up 1,012 yards and an outstanding 18 touchdowns, so both should still enter the 2024 season as Miami's clear top backfield options. It's worth noting, though, that Wright also brings blazing speed (4.38-second 40) to the table, and neither Achane or Mostert boast the size to hold up to extreme workloads. While both Achane and Mostert demand double-digit touches, it's possible that the addition of Wright could represent a cap to their respective fantasy ceilings, especially if the rookie impresses enough to eventually force his way into a three-headed backfield split.

Max Scherzer TEX SP
Rangers' Max Scherzer: Remains shut down
8m agoRangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Scherzer (back) will remain shut down from throwing for the next few days due to a right thumb and forearm issue, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
Scherzer has been on the 15-day injured list all season while completing his recovery from Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, but it's his pitching arm that has presented complications for him coming out of his first rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock back on April 24. Young said that Scherzer won't resume ramping up again until the tightness and discomfort in his arm completely subsides, so the veteran right-hander still looks to be multiple weeks away from being ready to return from the IL.
-
Zack Gelof OAK 2B
Athletics' Zack Gelof: Cleared for rehab assignment
10m agoGelof (oblique) will join Triple-A Las Vegas this weekend to begin a rehab assignment, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Gelof has missed the last two weeks with a strained left oblique but has been upping his baseball activities in recent days and has progressed to the point that he's ready to test things out in game action. Because the young infielder hasn't missed all that much time, he shouldn't need too many rehab at-bats before rejoining the Athletics' active roster.
-
Darell Hernaiz OAK SS
Athletics' Darell Hernaiz: Has severe ankle sprain
15m agoHernaiz has been diagnosed with a severe left ankle sprain and will visit with a foot specialist Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Hernaiz was injured during Tuesday's game with the Rangers when he stepped awkwardly on first base and was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. More should be known about a potential timetable for the rookie infielder following his exam, but it sounds like it will be a while.
-
Josh H. Smith TEX 3B
Rangers' Josh Smith: Sitting in early game Wednesday
15m agoSmith is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Athletics.
The lefty-hitting Smith will hit the bench for the first game of the twin bill while the Athletics bring southpaw JP Sears to the hill. Davis Wendzel will fill in for Smith at third base.
-
Braxton Garrett MIA SP
Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Returns from IL
23m agoThe Marlins reinstated Garrett (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
Garrett isn't expected to make his season debut for the big club until Sunday versus Philadelphia, but he'll rejoin the Marlins a few days early after fellow starter Edward Cabrera (shoulder) was placed on the IL in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old southpaw opened the season on the shelf due to a left shoulder impingement and made two rehab starts before a brief shutdown period while he contended with a dead-arm phase. Garrett has bounced back well since resuming his rehab assignment April 26, compiling a 1.32 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings across three outings between Triple-A Jacksonville and the Marlins' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. Garrett built up to 82 pitches in his latest rehab outing Monday and isn't expected to face any major workload restrictions when he debuts this weekend.
-
Edward Cabrera MIA SP
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Back to IL with shoulder issue
26m agoThe Marlins placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder impingement.
Cabrera was removed after two innings during his start in Tuesday's 8-2 loss to the Dodgers with what was referred to as right biceps discomfort, but it's officially a shoulder impingement that will force him to the IL. It's the same injury that kept him out for the first few weeks of the season. Cabrera will be eligible to return from the IL later this month, but there's currently no timetable for the righty.

Derrick White BOS SG
Celtics' Derrick White: Shines in Game 1 victory
5h agoWhite registered 25 points (9-16 FG, 7-12 3Pt), one rebound and five assists in 33 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
White embraced a bigger role on offense on a night when Jayson Tatum struggled (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), and the former responded by delivering his third consecutive game with 25 or more points. White has taken a step forward due to Kristaps Porzingis (calf) being sidelined, and it'd be fair to consider him Boston's third-best offensive weapon under the current lineup construction. White will aim to keep the streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday, as the Celtics have gone 20-3 this season when he's scored 20 or more points between the regular season and the playoffs.
-
Jaylen Brown BOS SF
Celtics' Jaylen Brown: Leads Boston in scoring
5h agoBrown notched 32 points (12-18 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, two assists and one block across 34 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 win over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Jayson Tatum had a rough shooting performance in the series opener, but Brown was there to pick him up, and the latter led the Celtics in scoring with an impressive, efficient display on the offensive end of the court. Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five playoff appearances, and he'll aim to keep that streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday.
-
Jayson Tatum BOS PF
Celtics' Jayson Tatum: Rough shooting effort Tuesday
5h agoTatum totaled 18 points (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks over 35 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The Celtics cruised to a 25-point win in the series opener, but Tatum's shooting struggles can't be overlooked, as he had a rough outing and struggled to get things going offensively. The fact that he still came close to reaching the 20-point mark while also posting a double-double goes to show just how immensely talented he is, as he can post above-average numbers even when he has a down night by his standards. Tatum will aim to deliver a bounce-back performance in Game 2 on Thursday.
-
Darius Garland CLE PG
Cavaliers' Darius Garland: Poor shooting display Tuesday
5h agoGarland had 14 points (6-15 FG, 2-8 3Pt), three rebounds, five assists and one steal over 36 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Garland is in line for a rough matchup in this series, as he'll have to deal with two excellent defenders in Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, so his Game 1 display is not entirely surprising. He didn't have his best performances in the first-round series against the Magic either, and he's averaging just 14.8 points and 5.4 assists per game through eight playoff appearances. In fact, Garland has failed to surpass the 15-point mark in six of his eight playoff outings, a clear downgrade after averaging 18.0 points per contest during the regular season.
-
Donovan Mitchell CLE SG
Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell: Puts up 33 points in Game 1 loss
5h agoMitchell produced 33 points (12-25 FG, 4-11 3Pt, 5-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists and one steal across 37 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Mitchell carried the momentum he had from his epic Game 7 performance against the Magic on Sunday and surpassed the 30-point mark once again. However, the rest of his teammates didn't step up, and the Cavaliers suffered a devastating 25-point loss in the series opener. Mitchell should continue to post excellent numbers as the Cavaliers' go-to player on offense -- by a wide margin -- but there's a chance his mighty performances might not translate into wins as it happened against the Magic in the previous round.
-
Evan Mobley CLE PF
Cavaliers' Evan Mobley: Double-doubles in Game 1 loss
5h agoMobley accumulated 17 points (8-12 FG, 1-2 FT), 13 rebounds, three assists and one block in 32 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Mobley continues to play as Cleveland's starting center due to Jarrett Allen (ribs) being sidelined, but his numbers have not suffered. Mobley recorded his third double-double across his last four appearances Tuesday, and he should continue to operate as a reliable two-way threat in Game 2 on Thursday, especially if Allen can't suit up again.
-
Elias Pettersson VAN C
Canucks' Elias Pettersson: Ready to rock for Game 1
24m agoPettersson (illness) will play Wednesday in Game 1 versus the Oilers, Thomas Drance of The Athletic reports.
Pettersson should slot into his usual spots on the second line and first power-play unit Wednesday. The 25-year-old pivot was a bit pedestrian in the first round against the Predators, picking up just three helpers through six games after racking up 34 goals and 89 points through 82 regular-season contests.
-
Arturs Silovs VAN G
Canucks' Arturs Silovs: Making fourth straight start
28m agoSilovs was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, per Kevin Woodley of NHL.com, putting him on track to guard the home crease versus Edmonton in Game 1 on Wednesday.
Silovs was excellent after being thrust into action in the first round versus Nashville due to injuries to Thatcher Demko (knee) and Casey DeSmith, who is now healthy but was dealing with a lower-body injury. Silovs went 2-1-0 while posting an impressive 1.70 GAA and .938 save percentage through three appearances against the Predators. The Connor McDavid-led Oilers offense racked up 22 goals through five games in the first round versus Winnipeg, so Silovs will likely be tested early and often Wednesday.
-
Oskar Lindblom SJ LW
Oskar Lindblom: Signs with Swedish club
1h agoLindblom signed a contract with Brynas IF of the SHL on Wednesday, Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Lindblom appeared in just one game for the Sharks in 2023-24, so it's not surprising to see him head to his native Sweden to continue his professional playing career. At this point it'd be surpsing to see Lindblom return to the NHL in the future.
-
Jeremy Swayman BOS G
Bruins' Jeremy Swayman: Slated to start
3h agoSwayman was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, per Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald, putting him on track to guard the road goal in Wednesday's Game 2 versus Florida.
Swayman was exceptional in Monday's Game 1, turning aside 38 of 39 shots en route to a convincing 5-1 win. As long as the 25-year-old netminder continues to play at this level, it seems unlikely coach Jim Montgomery will go back to the rotation between Swayman and Linus Ullmark he utilized to open the Bruins' first-round series versus Toronto.
-
Sergei Bobrovsky FLA G
Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky: In goal for Game 2
3h agoBobrovsky will patrol the home crease during Wednesday's Game 2 versus Boston, Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now reports.
Bobrovsky struggled in Monday's Game 1 against the Bruins, surrendering four goals on only 28 shots en route to a 5-1 defeat. The 35-year-old netminder will attempt to bounce back and help the Panthers even up the series at one game apiece before heading to Beantown for Game 3 on Friday.
-
Hugh McGing STL C
Blues' Hugh McGing: Signs two-year extension
3h agoMcGing signed a two-year, two-way contract extension with the Blues on Wednesday.
McGing spent most of the 2023-24 campaign with AHL Springfield, picking up eight goals and 39 points through 51 contests, but he also drew into five games with St. Louis, going scoreless over that span. He'll likely continue to fill a similar role for the organization over the next two seasons.
