Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa: Finally gets No. 3 receiver
    36m ago

Tagovailoa's top wide receiver options Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle will be joined by Odell Beckham, who officially signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Wednesday,

Miami added offensive tackle Patrick Paul in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft to help Tagovailoa stay upright, a key move following the departure of Robert Hunt to Carolina, but the team's only notable skill-position splashes were sixth-round wideout Malik Washington and fourth-round running back Jaylen Wright, both of whom are speedsters set to begin in depth roles. Adding an experienced veteran in the form of Beckham should finally provide Miami's offense with a reliable third starting wideout, something the team has lacked since coach Mike McDaniel's arrival in 2022. As Marcel Louis-Jacques notes, beyond the top tandem of Hill and Waddle no receiver has logged more than 32 catches or 417 yards in the McDaniel era. The arrival of Beckham, not to mention new tight end Jonnu Smith, promises to finally provide Tagovailoa with more reliable playmakers beyond his top two options.

Shakel Brown: Let go by Tennessee
    17h ago

Brown (ankle) was waived by the Titans on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Brown spent all last season on IR, but he was waived without an injury designation, so he should be considered healthy moving forward. The 25-year-old was an undrafted free agent out of Troy in 2023 and was working to earn a spot on the Titans roster when he suffered the injury in a preseason contest.

Swoboda (undisclosed) was waived by the Falcons with an injury designation Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Swoboda will revert to injured reserve if he goes unclaimed. At that point, he'll be forced to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign unless he can reach an injury settlement with Atlanta.

Peko (calf) signed a contract with the Lions on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Peko finished last season on injured reserve after competing in 13 games and recording 22 combined tackles. Now healthy again, the veteran lineman will get an opportunity in Detroit for his seventh NFL season. The Oregon State product will also have the chance to reunite with his defensive line coach from the Titans, Terrell Williams, who holds the same position now with the Lions.

Tigers' Mark Canha: Held out again Wednesday
    4m ago

Canha (illness) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Cleveland.

Canha was held out Tuesday due to an upper respiratory illness and will sit out again Wednesday. The Tigers are idle Thursday, so Canha will hope to be ready to roll Friday for the beginning of a homestand. Colt Keith is getting a start at designated hitter Wednesday, while Andy Ibanez will occupy second base.

  • Paul DeJong CHW SS
White Sox's Paul DeJong: Pops fourth homer
    6m ago

DeJong went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rays.

The veteran shortstop snapped a 16-game homer drought with his seventh-inning shot off Zach Eflin, but it was all the offense the White Sox could muster. DeJong had a brutal start to the season but has begun to provide some consistent production over the last could weeks, batting .263 (10-for-38) over his last 11 contests with three doubles, four RBI and six runs, but his 1:13 BB:K over that stretch highlights how quickly even that moderate level of success could evaporate. On the season, DeJong is slashing .228/.276/.435 with four homers and eight RBI.

Hayes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Hayes will get a breather for the series finale after he had started in each of the Pirates' last 11 games. The 27-year-old went 8-for-42 over that stretch, bringing his batting average down to a career-worst .240 for the season. Jared Triolo will fill in for Hayes at the hot corner Wednesday.

Pirates' Edward Olivares: On bench Wednesday
    10m ago

Olivares is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Olivares had started in each of the past four games and went 4-for-15 with a home run, a double and four RBI during that stretch, but he'll hit the bench while right-hander Jose Soriano takes the hill for the Halos. The Pirates still seem to view Olivares as a short-side platoon player, as three of his starts over the last four games came versus left-handed pitching.

White Sox's Michael Soroka: Remains winless
    10m ago

Soroka (0-4) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks over five innings as the White Sox fell 5-1. He struck out four.

The right-hander struggled to find the plate, throwing 59 of 102 pitches for strikes, and he didn't get much help from his defense or his offense. Soroka is still only 26 years old, but after missing most of three seasons due to multiple Achilles tears and other injuries, he simply may never regain the promise he showed in 2019. He'll carry a 6.34 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 20:23 K:BB through 38.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come this weekend at home against the Guardians.

Pirates' Connor Joe: Earns fifth consecutive start
    12m ago

Joe will start in right field and bat cleanup in Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Joe will be included in the lineup for the fifth game in a row, with the 31-year-old having made three starts at first base and two in right field. He should be a mainstay in the lineup against southpaws as a short-side platoon mate at first base for the lefty-hitting Rowdy Tellez, and Joe has made a strong case to see steady playing time against right-handed pitching as a corner outfielder. Joe enters Wednesday's contest with a team-best 131 wRC+ on the season, while Michael Taylor owns a 53 wRC+ and would seemingly be most at risk of moving out of a near-everyday role, despite being the Pirates' best defensive outfielder.

Celtics' Derrick White: Shines in Game 1 victory
    43m ago

White registered 25 points (9-16 FG, 7-12 3Pt), one rebound and five assists in 33 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

White embraced a bigger role on offense on a night where Jayson Tatum struggled (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), and he responded by delivering his third consecutive game with 25 or more points. White has taken a step forward with Kristaps Porzingis (calf) sidelined, and it'd be fair to consider him Boston's third-best offensive weapon under the current lineup construction. He'll aim to keep the streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday, as the Celtics have gone 20-3 this season when he's scored 20 or more points between the regular season and the playoffs.

Celtics' Jaylen Brown: Leads Boston in scoring

Brown notched 32 points (12-18 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, two assists and one block across 34 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 win over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Jayson Tatum had a rough shooting performance in the series opener, but Brown was there to pick him up, and the latter led the Celtics in scoring with an impressive, efficient display on the offensive end of the court. Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five playoff appearances, and he'll aim to keep that streak alive in Game 2 on Thursday.

Celtics' Jayson Tatum: Rough shooting effort Tuesday
    1h ago

Tatum totaled 18 points (7-19 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks over 35 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 victory over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Celtics cruised to a 25-point win in the series opener, but Tatum's shooting struggles can't be overlooked, as he had a rough outing and struggled to get things going offensively. The fact that he still came close to reaching the 20-point mark while also posting a double-double goes to show just how immensely talented he is, as he can post above-average numbers even when he has a down night by his standards. Tatum will aim to deliver a bounce-back performance in Game 2 on Thursday.

  • Darius Garland CLE PG
Cavaliers' Darius Garland: Poor shooting display Tuesday
    1h ago

Garland had 14 points (6-15 FG, 2-8 3Pt), three rebounds, five assists and one steal over 36 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Garland is in line for a rough matchup in this series, as he'll have to deal with two excellent defenders in Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, so his Game 1 display is not entirely surprising. He didn't have his best performances in the first-round series against the Magic either, and he's averaging just 14.8 points and 5.4 assists per game through eight playoff appearances. In fact, Garland has failed to surpass the 15-point mark in six of his eight playoff outings, a clear downgrade after averaging 18.0 points per contest during the regular season.

  • Donovan Mitchell CLE SG
Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell: Puts up 33 points in Game 1 loss
    1h ago

Mitchell produced 33 points (12-25 FG, 4-11 3Pt, 5-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists and one steal across 37 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Mitchell carried the momentum he had from his epic Game 7 performance against the Magic on Sunday and surpassed the 30-point mark once again. However, the rest of his teammates didn't step up, and the Cavaliers suffered a devastating 25-point loss in the series opener. Mitchell should continue to post excellent numbers as the Cavaliers' go-to player on offense -- by a wide margin -- but there's a chance his mighty performances might not translate into wins as it happened against the Magic in the previous round.

Cavaliers' Evan Mobley: Double-doubles in Game 1 loss

Mobley accumulated 17 points (8-12 FG, 1-2 FT), 13 rebounds, three assists and one block in 32 minutes during Tuesday's 120-95 loss to the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Mobley continues to play as Cleveland's starting center with Jarrett Allen (ribs) sidelined, but his numbers have not suffered a downgrade. Mobley recorded his third double-double across his last four appearances Tuesday, and he should continue to operate as a reliable two-way threat in Game 2 on Thursday, especially if Allen is unable to suit up once again.
